Jordan is 12 days old today 6-20-12

Jordan is twelve days old today and he opened his eyes for the very first time.  Praise God for His power.  We were not the first to witness him opening his eyes but he did do it again while we were visiting.  When we first got to the NICU the nurse had told us that he opened his eyes and just kept thinking to myself, “please do it again baby boy!” He did indeed open them again several times.  We weren’t able to get a great picture but we managed to get one.  We are so blessed that our little boy has been touched by God’s power and that God has huge plans for his life.  I never imagined him to fight for so long and I am so thankful that he did and that he is thriving.
Jordan’s nutrition and digestive system is doing very well.  Just three days ago he was only eating 0.5ml of breast milk eight times per day.  Today he was being given 1.5ml eight times per day.  The only nutrient that they have found to be low is his sodium level and they believe this is based on his prematurity.  His lung condition is the focus right now.  He was on a normal ventilator that allows him to breathe in a regular pattern.  After he had an x-ray, the doctors decided that it would be best to put him on a HFV (High Frequency Ventilator) to prevent further ventilator damage to his lungs.  The doctors are also going to start his steroid treatment to help his lungs mature faster for development.  This will be a low dose steroid treatment.  In the future, they will also be doing a surfactant treatment as well.  The doctor explained to us that normally, if lung condition is good, they try to take the babies off of the ventilator between 29-31 gestational weeks.  Of course this is decided on a case by case basis depending on lung condition.  This means that possibly, Jordan could be breathing alone without a ventilator but probably with an oxygen mask in 4-6 more weeks.  Please keep this in your prayers.  We know that God can do awesome and powerful things and the less time that he is on the ventilator, the less likely he is to have a lasting respiratory condition in the future.  Tonight, they will be moving Jordan to a different incubator and a different location in the room.  This is a big step because he finally gets a “spot” in the NICU based on his progress.  He is no longer extremely high risk.  Now he will have neighbor babies too.  I was actually surprised by the number of small babies like Jordan that are thriving in the NICU.  Jordan is still the youngest but there are other babies on some of the same treatments as Jordan.  We are so blessed that Jordan was able to be born in this particular hospital because it is one of the best in the country with the most knowledgeable doctors.  This was no mistake.  God has been planning Jordan’s birth from the beginning and placed us in this very location for this exact purpose.  We praise God for his great plans and will.
Jordan looked so cuddly and cozy today.  He is still on his tummy and wrapped in his padded blankie.  I really just wanted to cuddle with him.  After he is off of the ventilator we will be able to hold him love on him in person.  For now, we just have to settle for touching him and hand cuddling him.  While the doctors are moving him to his new “room” they will be able to weigh him and measure him again so we can see his progress since birth.  Look for that update on Friday.
I am starting to get a lot more energy and I am feeling a lot less sore from the surgery.  I have been tired though because I am waking up a 3-4 times per night to pump.  Gosh it’s like I have newborn or something ;).  LOL.  Please pray for patience for my husband and Jason as I am sometimes grumpy when I am tired.  Thank goodness for our awesome friends and our awesome church family.  I have not had to do any cooking since I have been home and this has been such a huge blessing for me.  God’s family has surrounded my family during this time.  Jason is doing well.  He is very much enjoying waking up to mommy and daddy every morning and being tucked in and put to bed by mommy and daddy every night.  I know that this routine of us driving to Aomori was the right choice to make because it creates so much more stability for Jason and he deserves to have as much of our attention as we are able to give him.
As I was reading my devotional today it was talking about how God is pleased when we learn to trust him fully and unconditionally.  We have been learning to put all of our faith in Him through this experience.  I feel as if my relationship with Christ has grown so much through this miracle.  I still consider myself a baby Christian but I am finding it much easier to share my faith with others because of the miracle that we are witnessing with Jordan.  I have learned to rely on God minute by minute and trust in His plans.  My worries and stress do nothing for the situation and God has everything under control without my assistance anyway.
Lord, I just want to thank you for your awesome miracles.  You have blessed my family in so many ways throughout this journey.  We are so humbled by this experience and the ability to have a front row seat in your work.  We never imagined that our little boy would be used in such big ways and we are so thankful that you have a big purpose for his life and for our lives.  We ask that you would help us to use his story as a testimony to you and that we would be able to reach many lives for your kingdom through this experience.  We ask that you would continue to infuse Jordan with your strength and specifically we ask that you would place your healing hands upon his lungs.  We ask that you would strengthen his lungs and allow them to mature and develop so that he is able to breathe without the ventilator.  We ask that you give the doctors wisdom so that they may know how to proceed with each step of his care.  We thank you that you have your healing hands over him.  I ask that you would be with Jacob and Jason and provide them patience and strength.  I also ask that you would guide us in our walk with you and teach us to be disciples for your purpose. Thank you for the many blessings you have placed in our lives.  We trust in your plan and your purpose.  We are so thankful for your blessings.  In your name I pray, Amen.
